$3 Million for a native fish hatchery near shepparton

$3 million boost for Victoria’s native fish hatchery

This election will be a choice between a united Labor Government or more of the Nationals’ cuts and chaos.

An elected Labor Government will implement Australia’s most comprehensive national policy for recreational fishing. This commitment will future-proof Victoria’s native fish supply for decades to come.

Bill Lodwick, Labor candidate for Nicholls, says:

“This new hatchery, to be located near Shepparton, will create new jobs in the area and guarantee supply of fish for the river systems and those who enjoy recreational fishing.

“Recreational fishing is a great way to get the family active and out into the great outdoors.

“Building great recreational fishers will inspire people to go fishing and spend time and money in the regions as they buy bait, fishing tackle, fuel, food and stay overnight.

“Labor cares about farmers, our rivers and the environment and has a comprehensive approach to making sure all improve. Farmers are angry about water prices and the Murray Darling Basin Plan. Blame the Nationals who have been mis-managing water for the past five years and keeping their dodgy activities secret. If elected, Labor will conduct a detailed inquiry into what has been going on and going wrong.”  said Mr Lodwick.

The extra funding of $3 million toward the hatchery will add to the Andrews State Government’s $7 million commitment under its Target One Million Plan to get more people fishing, more often.

Building a new native fish hatchery will enable millions of fish each year to be stocked into hundreds of waterways throughout Victoria.

This will help recover critically threatened fish and, combined with river health works, build exciting new recreational fisheries for the future.

This funding boost will ensure world class hatchery technology is used to breed critically threatened species such as freshwater catfish, Macquarie perch and trout cod.

The hatchery will be breeding record numbers of murray cod, golden and silver perch, with it being the largest supplier of murray cod in the country.

It won’t matter whether you fish at Lake Eildon, Eppalock or Cairn Curran or you like to throw a line in the Goulburn, Loddon, Campaspe, Oven or Kiewa rivers – there is going to be more cod to catch.

If you want a fair go for all Australians – vote Labor.

End the chaos.  Vote for change.  Vote for Labor.
